As for the Fat Cat connection…it’s not in any official way tied to this new venture. As a point of reference, Moldy Fig will follow a similar model as that of Fat Cat but be less of a divey game room and have more focus on the music.

Incidentally, another element of Moldy Fig’s conception is that one of Fat Cat’s original music programmers will be in charge of the same at Moldy Fig, which will make it a vital and lively hotspot for the most vibrant of NYC’s jazz scene, so expect some signal performances and major-league jam sessions. Moldy Fig’s opening also heralds the return of the Fat Cat Big Band to a weekly stage, since they left Fat Cat in November.

All in all, Moldy Fig is slated to become a significant music spot in NYC, but our focus right now is building a strong connection with the LES community so it can become, first and foremost, a neighborhood destination.

I’m currently involved with the development and opening of Moldy Fig and am extremely pleased to declare that your reader was correct!

Though it’s true the site is relatively quiet as we get all our licenses, permits, and other i-dotting/t-crossing in order, there will indeed be a jazz club at 178 Stanton St. with a beer & wine bar, a small plate menu, pool, ping pong, chess, shuffleboard, Scrabble, and some of the best jazz in New York City! We anticipate opening in the late spring.

Anyone in the neighborhood who’d like to learn more about Moldy Fig is welcome to swing by 178 Stanton, as there is often someone there while we prepare to open. We hosted a neighborhood meet & greet earlier in the month to give the community an opportunity to get to know us, and we made some fabulous new friends with our neighbors. We look forward to doing the same with everyone in the LES!

Speaking of dotting i’s and crossing t’s, Community Board 3 approved the wine license earlier this week.

Meanwhile, the Moldy Fig was just recently on the March SLA docket for a wine-only license.

Mounted to the side of 176 Rivington Street, overlooking Nathan Straus Playground, is this rotting piece of artwork.  It portrays a blue Puerto Rican flag with an inscription in Spanish reading, “tell the drugs, no, and life, yes.”

Upon first glance, the artist is not clear.  Anyone have an idea?

Boogie reader Rob Carmona sent us the following report regarding a man found dead on Delancey yesterday afternoon:

Hey guys, a male subject was found dead in their parked vehicle on Delancey St. btwn Ridge & Attorney St’s. The man was slumped over on top of his steering wheel. When Police from the 7th Precinct arrived, they pushed everyone away. This occured at exactly 2:41 p.m. That’s when I arrived and noticed a crowd around this Pick-Up Truck parallel parked on Delancey St. btwn Ridge & Attorney St’s. Right after I arrived plain clothes officers had arrived and started pushing people off the block and sealed the area off with Crime Tape.

Thanks to @jenniapolis for sending along the link to this music video by Madison-based (but now Brooklyn) foursome Locksley.  Entitled “Darling It’s True” (first single from their upcoming album Be in Love), the video centers on the lead singer as he walks the streets of the Lower East Side, including significant face time on Rivington and Attorney.  Shout outs include Clemente Soto Velez and Stop 1 Deli.  We reached out to the director, Chris Stocksmith, to find out more information.

- Video was shot back in April (4/22/09). The chosen take was actually shot in a light rain. We wrapped the camera in a garbage bag.

- We shot seven takes. The first three takes went sour early on, then the next four were complete. Of those four, we had two takes that were hard to choose between.
